Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (Aug. 31, 2025) – Michael “Buddy” Kofoid pounced in the closing laps at Huset’s Speedway on Sunday to capture his third World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series triumph at the track this season.
The L.G. Everist Huset’s Shootout presented by Myrl & Roy’s Paving, which was the season finale for Huset’s Speedway, paid $25,000 to win. That pushes Kofoid’s total winnings at the high-banked oval to $387,000 in the five races this year. Kofoid has won four of the last six World of Outlaws races at Huset’s Speedway.
“I’m glad we at least got one in (this weekend),” he said. “This is one of my favorite tracks. This has always been a really fun track for me. I’m confident that we’ll be just as good hopefully everywhere else we go.”
The night got off to a rough start as rain soaked the track just before the scheduled action, forcing more than a two-hour delay. After losing Saturday’s event opener to a late-afternoon rainout, the track crew worked hard to make sure the program would occur.
The 40-lap main event also saw a slow start with four stoppages within the first six laps. World of Outlaws points leader David Gravel, who was going for a clean sweep after setting quick time during qualifying and winning both a heat race and the dash, officially led the first 35 laps. However, he was challenged numerous times before Kofoid’s winning pass.
Carson Macedo took the lead on the initial start, but a caution for debris after several cars collided on the opening lap led to a complete restart. Gravel capitalized and held a comfortable advantage throughout the first half of the race.
Kofoid drove into contention with a great circuit on Lap 13 as he maneuvered from fourth to second place. He then reeled in Gravel before inching in front of him down the backstretch on Lap 25. Gravel drove around Kofoid in turns three and four to regain the top spot. Five laps later, the duo was side by side in turn two, but again Gravel’s momentum kept him in the lead.
The final caution came out one lap later and set up a 10-lap dash to the finish. Gravel nearly built a one-second lead before Kofoid closed, eventually taking advantage on Lap 36 as Gravel had a miscue while exiting the top groove in turn two.
“I just wanted to do the opposite of what he did in (turns) one and two,” Kofoid said. “I went to the bottom last second and stuck it pretty good. I could see him out of the corner of my eye. For a second I thought he broke because I didn’t think there was much to trip on the exit of (turn) two. I got clear of him and drove across. I protected one more time in (turns) one and two and then knew I needed to be on the top all the way around.”
Gravel stayed within a few car lengths as the duo duked it out in traffic for the final five laps before he finished 0.597 seconds behind Kofoid.
“I just got the right rear plugged in the cushion,” Gravel said. “I got tight, couldn’t get off of it. I definitely had a car capable of winning it. It just sucks we couldn’t get the job done.
“Hats off to the track crew. I didn’t think we were racing today and we had a pretty damn good track surface.”
Macedo, whose team had to rally after a mechanical problem in the dash, rounded out the podium with his season-best result at the track. He was also complimentary of the track crew before dissecting some of the frustrations of the race.
“We had a pretty wide, racy track,” he said. “Some nights you are the bug and some nights you’re the windshield. Tonight we were the bug.”
Sheldon Haudenschild recorded a fourth-place finish and Logan Schuchart charged from 17th to fifth. Huset’s Speedway track champion Ryan Timms placed sixth as he led three track regulars finishing in the top 10 (Mark Dobmeier was seventh and Kaleb Johnson moved from 15th to 10th).
Kofoid, Dobmeier and Macedo joined Gravel as heat race winners. Christopher Thram captured the Last Chance Showdown.
